My literature background indirectly led me to counseling and provided a lot of
background for my theoretical approach as well as experience. I look at counseling from
a Narrative, Reality, and Person-Centered approach. I tend to use a lot of Narrative,
Experiential, and exposure-based techniques in my work. Though I try to keep an open
lens in my work, I tend to gravitate towards older adolescents/younger adults dealing
with anxiety, depression, trauma, and life changes. My personal experience mixed with
my personality type seems to lend itself best to clients in these populations.
I see supervision not only as a mentorship but as an exploration of self. I believe that
supervision is designed to protect both clients and clinicians from ethical and safety
concerns. Supervision is a space to discuss the work, explore potential concerns, and
ensure both client and therapist are connecting in a way that is productive and mutually
beneficial. Perhaps more uniquely, I see supervision as a place for you to discover your
own voice as a professional. A big piece of therapy work is education, but just as big of
an element is how you show up as a person. Seeing yourself as a unique provider and
a unique person is of key importance to success in session. I see the
supervisor/supervisee relationship as a place to explore, develop, solidify, and evolve as
an individual clinician as well as a member of our therapy community.
